When You Should Start Pre-Conception Care

When You Should Start Pre-Conception Care

If you’re thinking about having a baby or have recently fallen pregnant you might be wondering when to start supporting your body for pregnancy. It’s a common question, and the answer might be earlier than you think!

Preconception care is all about optimising the quality of both eggs and sperm before fertilisation, setting the stage for a healthy pregnancy.

Female preconception support

This should start months before ovulation. Each egg goes through a maturation process of about 90 days before release, which means everything you eat, drink, and do during that time can influence:

  • Egg quality

  • Hormone balance

  • Chances of successful fertilisation and implantation

Your nutrition, stress levels, sleep, and overall health all play a role during this critical window. Supporting hormone balance at this stage is especially important, as it helps regulate ovulation, prepare the endometrium, and optimise fertility.

Male Fertility

Male preconception care is just as important! Sperm production takes 70–75 days, plus 2–3 weeks of final maturation. This means that sperm quality reflects the previous 2–3 months of health and lifestyle.

Factors like:

  • Diet and nutrient status

  • Alcohol intake and smoking

  • Stress and overall health

These all impact sperm count, motility, and DNA integrity.

When Should You and Your Partner Start?

Ideally, both partners should start at least 3 months, and preferably 6 months, before trying to conceive. This allows time to:

  • Support egg and sperm quality

  • Correct nutrient deficiencies

  • Regulate and balance hormones

  • Optimise overall health

Key Nutrients for Preconception Support

Supporting fertility starts with the right nutrients. Some essentials include:

  • Methylated folate – critical for DNA synthesis and early fetal development

  • Vitamin B12 – supports egg and sperm health

  • Antioxidants (Vitamin C, Vitamin E, zinc, selenium) – protect cells from oxidative stress

  • Iron and magnesium – support energy and hormonal balance

  • Omega 3 fatty acids – support hormone production and sperm/egg quality

For convenience, a comprehensive preconception formula can provide these nutrients in one supplement, making it easier to cover all bases. Shop Sproutling Supplements.
