Post Partum Hair Loss

Post Partum Hair Loss

Why it happens & how to support healthy hair growth

Noticing more hair in your brush or shower after having a baby? You're not alone. Postpartum hair loss is incredibly common and is often caused by the natural drop in oestrogen levels after birth, which shifts more hairs into the shedding phase.

While some hair loss is expected, nutrient deficiencies can contribute to excessive or prolonged shedding.

Key nutrients to consider

Iron
Iron deficiency is a common nutrient deficiency we see in clinic with postpartum clients. This is due to higher iron demands through pregnancy and blood loss during birth.

Low iron, particularly low ferritin (your stored iron), is a common contributor to ongoing hair loss as it's a crucial nutrient for hair growth! Have your iron tested with your health care practitioner to assess your levels.

Protein
Hair is primarily made of protein, making adequate protein intake essential for healthy hair growth!

It’s common to hear mum’s skipping meals, eating kids left overs or eating on the go which can affect your protein intake. Try to aim for 20-30g of protein per meal to support your protein intake and hair growth.

Thyroid
If you are struggling with excessive hair loss coupled with fatigue, brain fog, joint pain its worth having your thyroid checked.

An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), which can occur after pregnancy, may contribute to increased hair shedding, thinning hair and slower regrowth

Don't stop your prenatal just yet

Many women stop taking their prenatal supplements once their baby is born, but your nutritional needs remain high during the postpartum period, especially if you're breastfeeding. Continuing a quality prenatal can help replenish nutrients depleted during pregnancy and birth while supporting your recovery, energy levels and healthy hair growth.

We love recommending Falli during the postpartum period, as it contains Shatavari, a beautiful herb traditionally used to support hormone balance and recovery after birth. It also provides essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, including selenium, an important nutrient that supports healthy hair growth, thyroid function and overall postpartum wellbeing.
